RUNNER

AKA: Man-Runner
Real Name: Unknown
Breed: Rat Terrier/Mix

A man of mystery to everyone except Elder. He’s older than most the puppies by quite a few years (though still a bit younger than Elder) and joined the pack more recently. Unknown to all save Elder, he’s haunted by a horrific past, enslaved and brutally treated in his youth by humans. Because he was identified by a number for years by humans, he eventually forgot his birth name and can’t remember it to this day. He eventually escaped and fought in the Species Civil War.

During the war, his hatred for humans consumed him, he became a ferocious monster and killer slaying hundreds with his hands and teeth. It was an obsession, and for a time he believed he wouldn’t be content until every last human was wiped off the face of the earth. For this they called him MANRUNNER, and he eventually became a living legend.

He was a War Hero to animans, and a War Criminal to humans. After the war, he always had to keep an eye out for human mercenaries out for his pelt. But he was always able to stay one step ahead with help from animans who idolized him.

Over the years the ghosts of his past actions began to creep into his dreams, and sometimes even when he wasn’t asleep. He began to hate himself, and hated those he felt made him into what he was. He eventually came to an uneasy peace with himself, although it wasn’t easy, and he still has issues with who he is and what he’s done from time to time.

Wanting to begin anew, he changed his name to Runner and sought help from another who knows what it is to have a troubled past, Elder. Elder, ever compassionate, shared tears with him and took him in.

Runner is still coming to terms with himself. Although he enjoys the company the others offer, he spends much time in solitude contemplating life and his place in it. Through all this he’s developed a casual relationship with Derringer (though not by HIS choice), and although he’s demonstrative in his resistance, he truly appreciates her interest in him even though he can’t understand how she sees beyond the monster he is.
